Discover Kurdistan's diverse climate and seasonal traditions:
🌍 Hewaya Kurdistan (Kurdistan's Climate)
🏔️ Diverse Geography, Diverse Weather
Kurdistan's geography creates varied climates. The mountainous regions (like Amadiya, Rawanduz, and Qandil) experience cold winters with heavy snowfall and mild summers. The plains (Hewlêr, Silêmanî) have hot, dry summers reaching 40-45°C and cool, wet winters. The foothills enjoy moderate temperatures year-round. This diversity means you can ski in the mountains and swim in valleys on the same day in spring!
🌸 Bihar (Spring) - Season of Renewal
Spring (March-May) is the most beloved season in Kurdistan. The landscape transforms into a green paradise with wildflowers covering the mountains. Newroz (March 21), the Kurdish New Year, marks the beginning of spring. Families go on seyran (picnics) to enjoy the mild weather and blooming nature. The saying "Bihar hat, dil şa bû" (Spring came, hearts rejoiced) captures the joy this season brings.
☀️ Havîn (Summer) - Heat and Harvest
Summer (June-August) brings intense heat to the plains, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C. Many families escape to mountain resorts where it's cooler. This is harvest season for wheat, barley, and fruits. Traditional serma (shaded outdoor seating areas) and serdab (underground cool rooms) help people cope with the heat. Evening gatherings become common as people wait for cooler temperatures.
🍂 Payîz (Autumn) - Golden Season
Autumn (September-November) brings relief from summer heat. Temperatures become pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities. This is grape harvest season, and families make şîra tirî (grape molasses) and mewîj (raisins). The mountains turn golden and red with changing leaves. Pomegranates, figs, and walnuts ripen. Many consider autumn the second-best season after spring.
❄️ Zivistan (Winter) - Snow and Warmth
Winter (December-February) varies by region. Mountains receive heavy snow, perfect for skiing and winter sports. Plains experience cold, rainy weather. Families gather around sobê (heaters) or traditional tendûr (clay ovens) for warmth. Winter foods include kulikê zivistanê (winter soups), roasted chestnuts, and hot tea. Despite the cold, winter brings families together indoors for storytelling and traditional games.
