7. Çand (Culture): Jiyana Rojane ya Kurdî
🏘️ Daily Life in Kurdistan
🛒 Shopping Culture
Traditional markets (bazar) remain central to Kurdish life. People prefer buying fresh produce daily from local vendors. Bargaining is common and expected. Shopkeepers often offer tea to regular customers. Modern supermarkets exist in cities, but many still prefer the personal touch of traditional shops where vendors know customers by name and family.
🍽️ Food & Hospitality
Meals are social events in Kurdish culture. Restaurants serve as gathering places for friends and family. It's common to spend hours at a meal, talking and drinking tea. Sharing food is important - ordering multiple dishes to share is normal. Refusing food or drink can be seen as impolite. The phrase "Bi xêr hatî" (welcome) is heard constantly in restaurants and homes.
🚶 Getting Around
Walking is common in Kurdish cities and villages. People are generally helpful with directions and often walk with you part of the way. Taxis are affordable and widely used. In cities, shared taxis (servîs) follow set routes. Public buses connect neighborhoods. Many people know their neighborhoods intimately and can give detailed directions using landmarks rather than street names.
☕ Café Culture
Qehwexane (cafés) are essential to Kurdish social life. Men traditionally gather at cafés to drink tea, play games, and discuss news. Modern cafés now welcome everyone and serve as workspaces and meeting places. Tea (çay) is the drink of choice, served in small glasses. Spending hours at a café is normal and expected - rushing is not part of the culture.
