6. Ordinal Numbers
First, second, third...

Ordinal numbers are used for ordering or ranking. In Kurdish, they are formed by adding -em/-emîn/-yem/-yemîn to cardinal numbers.

Number Cardinal Ordinal English
1st yek yekem / yekemîn first
2nd du duyem / duyemîn second
3rd sêyem / sêyemîn third
4th çar çarem / çaremîn fourth
5th pênc pêncem / pêncemîn fifth
6th şeş şeşem / şeşemîn sixth
7th heft heftem / heftemîn seventh
8th heşt heştem / heştemîn eighth
9th neh nehem / nehemîn ninth
10th deh dehem / dehemîn tenth
11th yanzdeh yanzdehem eleventh
20th bîst bîstem twentieth
100th sed sedem one hundredth
📌 Examples:
Ez di rêza yekem de me.
I am in the first row.
Ev pirtûka duyem e.
This is the second book.
Ew di qata sêyem de dimîne.
He/She lives on the third floor.
Ez di pola çarem de me.
I am in the fourth class.
💡 Pattern!

Short form: -em (yekem, duyem, sêyem)
Long form: -emîn (yekemîn, duyemîn, sêyemîn)
Both forms are correct and commonly used!

7. Fractions
Half, quarter, third...
Fraction Kurdish English
½ nîv half
¼ çarek quarter
sêyek one third
duyek two thirds
¾ sê çarek three quarters
pêncyek one fifth

I eat half of the bread.
Saet du û nîv e.
It's two thirty (two and a half).
Ez çarekê pirtûkê xwendim.
I read a quarter of the book.
8. Using Numbers with Nouns
Number + noun combinations

When using numbers with nouns in Kurdish:

  • Number 1: Use indefinite article -ek/-yek
  • Numbers 2+: Noun stays in singular form (no plural)
Kurdish Literal English
pirtûkek book + one one book / a book
du pirtûk two + book (singular!) two books
sê pirtûk three + book (singular!) three books
pênc zarok five + child (singular!) five children
deh kes ten + person (singular!) ten people
sed mal hundred + house (singular!) one hundred houses
💡 Important Rule!

Unlike English, Kurdish keeps the noun in singular form after numbers!
English: three books
Kurdish: sê pirtûk (NOT: sê pirtûkan)

📌 Examples in Sentences:
Ez du pirtûk dixwînim.
I read two books.
Min sê sêv xwarin.
I ate three apples.
Li vir pênc zarok hene.
There are five children here.
Ez deh salî me.
I am ten years old.
